About Inkle Weaving

Inkle weaving is a form of warp-faced weaving used to create strong, decorative bands for straps, belts, trim, guitar straps, bookmarks, bag handles, and historical reproductions. Unlike many forms of weaving, the warp threads completely cover the weft, meaning the colors you see in the finished band come almost entirely from the arrangement of the warp.

Most inkle patterns are created by alternating heddled and unheddled threads. As the sheds change, different warp threads rise to the surface, creating the characteristic staggered appearance of an inkle band. Because of this structure, it can sometimes be difficult to visualize how a warp color order will appear once woven.

The Inkle Band Builder is designed to make that process easier. Simply choose your warp colors and click on the band preview to assign colors to individual warp threads. The preview displays the alternating sheds of a warp-faced band, helping you experiment with stripes, color-and-weave effects, and repeating motifs before you begin warping your loom.

Dark outlines in the warp order indicate heddled threads, while lighter outlines indicate unheddled threads. The generated warp order can be printed or saved as a PDF, making it easy to take directly to the loom.
